Mirror Deflector Tips
Back to Tips

If you have a passenger, you know that passenger buffeting in a severe problem on the GL1800. This is the last step in solving this problem. There is a significant amount of air turbulence under the mirror, over the handle grips and then to the passengers body. These mirror deflectors combined with the Tulsa Windshield and Tulsa Wind Wings solve the majority of the buffeting, at least for short passengers, mine is 5'-0" and I ride with my suspension between zero and 9.

The V&P Mirror Deflectors are not the quality I would like:

  1. Looks like they have been stack cut on a band saw (the edges are not smooth and rounded edges are not round).

  2. The edges do not appear to be sanded.

  3. They mount with double faced tape and there have been reports of them coming loose.

  4. They depend on hinge tension on a plastic hinge to keep them in place. Reports that over time they tend to loose their position.

This is an example of the rough cut. It is particularly bad in the bottom left corner where it is supposed to be round. It is also rough along the top right 1/3 and into the corner and you can see in the top left corner that the top which should be straight has a dip in it.

I haven't had time and probably won't work backwards. Given what I know now, I would select the windshield you want. The Tulsa Windshield unlike reported on the 1500's does not really help the passenger. I like it as a driver as it makes a nice pocket and I don't get as much water in my face when it rains.

I would then add the mirror deflectors. I'm not so sure this won't take care of most of the problem and they are only $30.00. At least it is worth a try.

If the mirror deflectors don't do it, I would add the Tulsa Wind Wings which are designed primarily to move air away from the rider.

Response from Val - The Owner

The Mirror Deflectors are machined with high speed routers, which gives a smooth edge in itself, occasionally some material has hard spots in it and may cause a different finish, we are not aware of any going out with rough edges, If someone has them, they should return the product. We have a 100% guarantee. As for bonding, we use Hi Bond tape which cures within 48 hrs when properly applied, (use heat gun to warm surfaces). Has terrific holding power, difficult but possible to remove, half of tape will stay on each surface, simple rub off with thumb, (comes off in a rolling action) and you have an undamaged surface. We chose that method because we own and ride the bikes,a nd don't like to put any fasteners that you drill into the bike, we feel that anyone who doesn't want the product anymore, should be able to remove it without any damage showing.
The product as is, has been tested and functions very well at normal highway speeds, however at speeds above 90 they tend to move out of position, for those who wish to go that fast, we have a fix for it.
