Auxiliary Power Tips

The following was posted on the GL1800riders.com Bulletin Board.

Here we go: Go to auto parts store or Walmart and get a 30amp relay...a 12ga. wire.
Hook it up like this: Working with relay,
Pin number # 85 ground wire, hook to battery ground, can use 16ga. wire.
Pin number # 30 hot wire, hook to battery positive, use in line fuse, use 12ga. wire.
Pin number # 86 this is relay switch, hook to accessory positive terminal of fuse box, use 16ga. wire. (Leave the 5amp fuse alone) it only take 1/10th of an amp to turn the relay on, and it is not hot until you turn of the key.
Pin number # 87 this will be your hot wire to the lighter, use 12ga.wire.

On lighter, ground it to a bolt at goes to the frame, this will depend of course where you install the lighter.

By using a relay, it prevents electrical spikes from going through the electrical system when you turn the key on, and protects the computer also.

Suggestions: Where to install lighter on 1800, if you do not have heated grips, use the empty panel, or you can install it 1/2" below the key slot that is used to open the right hand front storage compartment door.

I know this sounds complicated, but it only takes about a hour to do. I use a hole saw with a drill bit in the middle of it to make the hole, generally it takes 7/8" hole saw, it provides a nice tight and clean fit. I would use the regular lighter, if you use the lit one, its just more wires to run, but of course that's up to you.

If you print these instructions out, and use them exactly as I've told you, I guarantee it will work perfect, and you will not burn up any wiring, nor will you hurt the bikes computer system, BUT you must use a RELAY.

Where the wires go, fuse block mounting bolt double for passenger heated clothing outlet, a neat place to put your auxilary fuses,  A good place to put a ground block so your battery is not cluttered. Main wire goes to the terminal on the right side of engine.  A few relays will fit here too.
